Challenges and Opportunities: Why Poverty Matters and Why Schools Can Matter More
Limited Capacity seats available

Saturday morning's keynote speaker will be Dr.  Tammy Pawloski who has led more than 500 professional learning events for teachers, school leaders, and stakeholders.  She understands the challenges and opportunities of teaching, and has devoted the last ten years to the study of children of poverty - why they struggle and which strategies have the greatest impact.   Dr. Pawloski is a noted expert because of her breadth of knowledge, however what resonates most with teachers and school leaders is her ability to deliver an uncommon combination of research, practice, and compelling stories from the field that empower and challenge them to show up and show out as effective educators.

One hallmark of a quality Montessori program is a well-equipped classroom environment with a set of beautiful learning materials. Some materials are purchased, others are created by the teacher. In this session we will review the purpose and function of the traditional manipulative materials as well as recent research on outcomes for children who attend Montessori schools. The goal is to clarify our reasons for introducing supplementary or alternative materials and activities, so that we can make wise decisions when preparing an optimal environment for our children.

After 100 years, are our Practical Life areas still beneficial to today's child? Are they effective in helping children plan, solve problems and move with purpose? Let's re-examine the experiences considered to be the most important in the 0-3 prepared environment to keep this the foundation within our communities. Part theater, part two friends chatting over coffee and muffins (plenty to share with attendees), and a digital slideshow to enhance the conversation - join us!

Learn to recognize and create activities which develop each child’s capacity to discover, explore and create, while preserving Montessori’s vision of Practical Life as the heart of a vital, working community. Re-fresh or recognize the importance of observation as the guide to revealing the child, their interests, and our role to connect through the prepared environment. Real ideas. Real friends. Real resources that can be implemented on Monday morning.

The Prepared Environment and Psychological Safety: Practice for Fostering Social-Emotional Growth in the Montessori Classroom
Limited Capacity filling up

This 90-minute presentation (10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.) will combine Montessori philosophy with modern psychological research, to address the question of how best to prepare the learning environment for optimal social-emotional development. This presentation will also examine the impact of perceived “psychological safety” on creative thinking, collaborative learning, and a willingness to take developmentally-appropriate risks. Participants will be asked to apply the theories and practices presented, by engaging in small-group discussions around vignettes.

Participants will gain an understanding of ways to prepare the learning environment for optimal social-emotional growth, with an emphasis on practices that contribute to a sense of psychological safety. Participants will use vignettes and small group discussions to deepen their understanding of the ways in which fostering psychological safety can enhance creative thinking, collaborative learning, and a willingness to take developmentally-appropriate risks in the learning environment.

Through the incredible response to the article that Mirko Sever and I wrote in the summer issue of "Montessori Life" 2017, I was invited to present at the AIMs conference on my thoughts on "Growing up Gay". It was clear from the many responses that flooded in from the article that Montessori teachers and administrators are in need of a voice for inclusion and understanding. I will share my thoughts and those of the many young people who are struggling with acceptance and a place. Do I have all the answers, No! Common Queries and Refined Responses: What Parents Ask, What We Say, and What They Hear
Limited Capacity full

Come join us for this theatrical and sometimes comical workshop, where we will examine the most common questions parents ask, gathered through a nation-wide survey of Montessori teachers and administrators. Through improvisation and role-playing, we will examine the best ways to answer parent inquiries of all kinds. We will analyze the roots of parental worry to gain insight to what parents are really thinking. Finally, we will analyze the most effective (and least effective) terminology to use to moderate fear, encourage a deeper understanding of Montessori principles, and pave the way for functional parent/teacher relationships.

Goals:
1. To instill assurance that parent interactions can be positive and fruitful.
2. To create mindfulness around insight and empathetic thinking toward parents.
3. To offer concrete strategies and language to use when parents have questions.
4. To provide the opportunity to role play and practice a manner of dialoguing with parents that honors their true inner concerns and validates the position and feelings of the teacher.

Outcomes:
1. Participants will enhance their answers to the most common questions that parents ask.
2. Participants will learn techniques to overcome defensiveness and improve their listening skills with parents.

Five Essentials to Montessori 0-6 Literacy
Limited Capacity seats available

Right from the moment of birth a baby is not only absorbing words but also taking in the tone, intonation and the structure of the way adults in the environment speak.  He creates his own way of speaking from the things that he hears. This workshop has the dual purpose of refreshing the current 0-6 educator on the essentials of Montessori literacy while providing a format for presenting the information to the parent community.  The five essentials will highlight observations about language development made by Maria Montessori.
1. Prepare the environment
2. Focus on the sounds
3. Lower case letters, seen, touched and heard
4. Open-ended process-oriented art, music and practical life activities
5. Books

1) The educator will be able to use the essentials shared in this workshop to assist in their communication with their parent community.
2) The educator will see and experience children, in the sensitive period for language, absorbing and creating their language.
3) The educator will be refreshed in their use of the conversation and storytelling, singing and word play, as well as sandpaper letters and moveable alphabet.

Plan B: Creating Inclusive Classrooms
Limited Capacity full

Current buzzwords "accommodation and modification" are Dr. Montessori’s “follow the child.” Most children easily respond to the call of the materials. But how do we engage children with sensory processing issues? Support those with anxiety or behavioral issues? This workshop will give you the tools necessary to understand what your students are seeking and how to make the essential adjustments.

We will discuss common challenging behaviors that are present in many of our classrooms using six different categories. After describing the category at the Early Childhood and Elementary levels, we will give examples of strategies for each one. We want for classroom teachers to walk out of our presentation with multiple strategies and tools to support the needs of their most challenging students, first and foremost. We would also like to give classroom teachers information about having meetings with parents about behaviors and what next steps might look like to support overall growth and development for these children.

Three Years of Digital Instruction in Authentic Early Childhood Classrooms
Limited Capacity seats available

This workshop will explore the possibilities of using digital presentations of three-period lessons in authentic Early Childhood classrooms.  We will look at Montessori's own words on visual aids, as well as scholarly research of children's visual media, including Dr. Angeline Lillard's recent studies of television's effects on executive function.  We will review best practice standards for introducing such work into the classroom, and we will summarize three years of research on digital media in three separate Montessori classrooms. We will also see samples of the teaching videos used in those three classrooms.

The participant will leave the workshop with references for further research, a free app for iOS or Android tablets with which to experiment, and a fuller understanding of how Montessori-inspired media can provide three-period lessons to diverse learners throughout the day in complete harmony with the authentic Montessori classroom. In addition, the participant will hear some of the surprising results from our study.

Community Activism: The New Call for Peace Education
Limited Capacity seats available

As a Montessori teacher and first Latina ever elected to a highly politicized High school District, and having been involved in teacher training, in several other countries, I think it's time for us to look at Montessori education, bilingual education and a new voice for Maria Montessori's peace education in activism. I would like us to look very carefully at what your role can be as a Montessori Educator in your community, issues of equity, Social justice, and a revised role for elite Montessori Education.  We can make Montessori Education standards start fitting into education policy.  Montessorians should be a voice for education equity, Social justice because of the role Maria Montessori played worldwide. Opening the discussion of our role as educators needs to be addressed especially with what is happening in regards to equity in this country.

Opening up the discussion of activism, equity and social justice as the role of Montessori Peace education in our greater communities. Hopefully inspiring new leaders and leadership for equity to ensue with involvement in public education, education policy and Social Justice issues that are impacting black and brown communities. Communities that are torn apart and living in the shadows due to lack of documentation and the criminalization of their communities under the current administration policies towards immigration.

Preparing an Environment that Nurtures the Adults as well as the children
Limited Capacity full

Do adults at your school always model the healthy peer relationships that we work to develop in children? Come learn about 10 ways that schools commonly miss the mark, then discuss ways to cultivate normalization, respectful interaction, and the collaboration necessary for a quality Montessori community experience. Montessori can work for every child—let’s make it work better for the adults!

In Montessori we understand how to create an aesthetically beautiful, emotionally balanced prepared environment for children.  However, the school-wide prepared environment for adults in our communities is often not given enough attention. This gap can be witnessed in how we communicate with parents, staff relationships, and how we build trust at this level.  Many practical ideas and suggestion will be highlighted.

What is Freedom? What do we do with it?
Limited Capacity full

Freedom is one of the most essential concepts in Montessori and one of the most debated in terms of classroom practice. It is one of the most abstract ideas and probably the most discussed in terms of how it is manifested in classroom practice. When any human being makes a choice, s/he is expressing who s/he is as an individual and what it is that makes us all human. By connecting Freedom with Choice we can more productively discuss issues small and large. ~ Montessori tells us that the moral choices that we make will not be developed by philosophizing. Activity, experience, and action is how they will grow at each age level. (From Childhood to Adolellscence, p. 87) If we value diversity we need to act, not just talk.

1. To briefly bring us together in defining freedom and choice.
2. to  present a chart that is very practical in assessing the amount of choice we are giving in the classroom.(Q & A at this point)
3. to have small groups further develop the chart in specific ways
4. to share those ideas for development (This sharing will be a kind of Q&A with each other, with me guiding but not being the one who answers all questions.)In the end, to have folks leave feeling safe in examining some essential ideas and with a tool for specific action
